South Lake Tahoe, CA- Travel problems, high winds, and heavy snow are the concerns as another round of winter weather hits South Lake Tahoe this weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 4:00 PM on Friday, with the first round of storms expected to move through tonight. A stronger round of weather is expected Saturday. The National Weather Service says we could get 1-2 more feet of snow. To check weather conditions in real time, click here. Wind is also a concern with this storm, with gusts up to 45 mph. High winds and heavy snow could cause extensive tree damage.

“If there are things people in town need to get done the time to do that is before the snow starts falling this afternoon,” said Chris Fiore, Communications Manager for the City, “as we gear up for another round of snow, we want to keep the roads as clear as possible to make snow removal as easy as possible.”

The city is asking people to remove vehicles from snow removal areas before the storm hits this weekend. Illegally parked and abandoned cars hampered snow removal efforts during the storm last weekend.

“We know how hard our snow removal teams work, but what you don’t see are some of the people working behind the scenes,” said Fiore, “City Shop staff and mechanics are also working around the clock to keep our snow removal equipment up and running. It’s not an easy task, and they do an outstanding job.”

CalTrans says chain controls on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, on U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit and on other Sierra mountain roadways should be anticipated Friday night through early Monday. Drivers should anticipate delays and increased travel time throughout the weekend, especially during ski commute times. Travel is not advised as conditions get worse. To check road conditions in real-time, click here. For snow safe suggestions, click here.

Plows will be out in all zones this weekend.
