About the Project
The City of South Lake Tahoe Department of Public Works, in coordination with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is proposing to construct a Class I shared-use path and Class II bike lanes along Al Tahoe Boulevard in the vicinity of the South Tahoe Middle School. The limits of the project are Al Tahoe Blvd between the US Route 50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd) and Johnson Boulevard. The project builds upon the pilot project that was initiated in July 2017 and closes a .42 mile gap in non-motorized connectivity and provide safe travel between the existing Class I shared-use path on the north side of US 50 and the existing Class I shared-use path that begins at Johnson Boulevard near Lake Tahoe Community College (Al Tahoe Boulevard and Johnson Boulevard intersection). The Class I shared-use path will be 10 feet wide and, by definition, would be a shared-use path with an exclusive right-of-way for bicyclists and pedestrians, away from the roadway and with cross flows by motor traffic minimized. Class I facilities support both recreational and commuting opportunities.
In addition, a Class II bike lane would be constructed on both sides of Al Tahoe Blvd. Class II facilities are bike lanes established along streets and are defined by pavement striping and signage to delineate a portion of a roadway for bicycle travel. Bike lanes are one-way facilities, typically striped adjacent to motor traffic traveling in the same direction (Caltrans 2017a).
The roadway will be redesigned to create alternative, safe, non-vehicular transportation in the vicinity of South Tahoe Middle School and provide a connection between two existing non-motorized facilities. Improvements include addition of bike lanes, pedestrian paths, and pedestrian sidewalks, and streetscape improvements such as hardscape, landscape, and pedestrian lighting.

Construction staging will be located on northerly portion of the roadway being reconfigured for the multi-use path. Alternatively, the Middle School property, while school is out during the summer, is intended for construction staging and storage use during construction. While the City is still in the design and permitting stages, a construction start date is planned for 2019. Federal funding has been awarded from an Active Transportation Program grant to the City to design and construct the majority of the project with funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The grant is administered through the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and will require compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
