[ARCHIVED] Tahoe Keys Fire

South Lake Tahoe Police Department dispatch received a call at 1:48pm today with reports of smoke from a multifamily dwelling on Ala Wai in the Tahoe Keys neighborhood. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue arrived on scene at 1:56pm.

A multifamily unit consisting of eight (8) units was on fire and it is estimated that damages will exceed $3 million. The fire started in an attic of the center unit and spread to adjoining units on both sides. The eight units all have hard wiring for fire alarms but there are no sprinkler systems in any of the units. One family was evacuated from the scene and there are no injuries or fatalities.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District Chief Harris will begin an investigation once the fire is contained. Also South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue’s investigator Al Martinez is in route to the scene and will work with Chief Harris on the investigation.

There are over 20 fire fighters on the scene. Responding agencies include; South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, CalFire, Lake Valley Fire Protection District and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District. Also on scene are Southwest Gas, Liberty Utilities and Tahoe Keys Security. The Incident Commander is South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen.
