[ARCHIVED] Tahoe Keys Fire – Update #1

South Lake Tahoe, CA (May 4, 2016 – 9:43am) – South Lake Tahoe Police Department dispatch received a call on Tuesday afternoon reporting smoke being seen at a multifamily dwelling on Ala Wai in the Tahoe Keys neighborhood. The fire was contained at approximately 4:10pm on Tuesday, May 3rd and fire fighters remained on the scene until approximately 9:00pm.

A multifamily unit consisting of nine (9) units had visible smoke and it is estimated that damages will exceed $3 million. Of the nine (9) units, seven (7) of the units suffered significant damage. This is an update at yesterday’s report of the multifamily dwelling consisting of eight (8) units; the dwelling consists of nine (9) condominium units. The fire started in an attic of the center unit and spread to adjoining units on both sides.

Tahoe Keys Security is working with City of South Lake Tahoe officials on the security of the condominium complex. The American Red Cross responded and assisted the one family who was evacuated from the scene and there are no injuries or fatalities.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue’s Fire investigator Al Martinez is in the process of conducting an investigation. Lake Valley Fire Protection District Chief Harris will not be participating in the investigation as previously reported.

Responding agencies included; South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, CalFire, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and American Red Cross. Also on scene were Southwest Gas, Liberty Utilities and Tahoe Keys Security. The Incident Commander was South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen.
