South Lake Tahoe, CA- A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the City of South Lake Tahoe as we gear up for another round of winter weather. Public Works and snow removal teams will be out in full force trying to keep roads safe.

The National Weather Service says we could get 1-2 more feet of snow at lake level with the next round of storms. To check weather conditions in real time, click here. The heaviest snow is expected Friday night, and Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Wind is also a concern with this storm, with gusts up to 45 mph. High winds and heavy snow could cause extensive tree damage.

“We know winter storms are common in Tahoe, but each one is different, and we want people to stay safe,” says Chris Fiore, Communications Manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe.

As a reminder drivers should anticipate delays and increased travel time throughout the weekend, especially during ski commute times.  Travel is not advised as conditions get worse. To check road conditions in real-time, click here. For snow safe suggestions, click here.

“We had issues with abandoned or illegally parked cars during the last storm, and we need people to remember they aren’t just illegal, they can be dangerous,” said Fiore, “To make snow removal easier vehicles need to be moved out of snow removal areas before the storm starts.”

Also, property owners that have property lines that border, or are adjacent to, any city right-of-way, it is the property owner’s responsibility to remove the snow from any sidewalk or walkway. Pedestrian safety is a big concern during the winter months and when the sidewalks and walkways are not cleared it forces the pedestrians onto the plowed roadways.

Owners and their tenants must clear the sidewalk or walkway from snow and ice within 12 hours of the end of the snow event, or every 24 hours within the duration of a snow event. Community Service Officers will be out enforcing this city code today and will be reminding each property owner that has not complied that they need to do so.

Plows are already out and will continue to maintain roads as needed.
