[ARCHIVED] Heavy snow creates hazardous road conditions, service delays

South Lake Tahoe, CA- More than 20 inches of snow overnight are creating dangerous driving conditions. Snow plows are out but with this much snow the removal process can take some time.

“We are asking for patience as our plow operators work very hard to clear our streets,” said Public Works Director Ray Jarvis, “There is a lot of ground to cover but we will get there.

When in snow removal conditions, snowplows have the right of way on streets, and vehicles left unattended in the streets are subject to citation and/or tow. South Lake Tahoe Police are aggressively ticketing people with vehicles in the right of way.

“Parking in the right of way during a snow event is not just illegal it’s dangerous,” said Communications Manager Chris Fiore, “It’s unacceptable, puts people at risk, and slows down the snow removal process.”

Snow is expected to continue today and South Lake Tahoe remains under a winter storm and avalanche warning. For up to date information on the weather, click here.

South Tahoe Refuse is canceling trash pickup today as well because of the weather. People can bring their garbage to the transfer station at no charge, or they will take all next week on their regular service day. If they have any questions please call (530) 541-5105 or check their Facebook page or website

Drivers should anticipate delays and increased travel time throughout the week. Travel could be very difficult if conditions worsen. To check road conditions in real-time, click here. Caltrans also has up to the minute information on their Facebook page. For snow safe suggestions, click here.
