Smoke from the King Fire, which originated in Pollack Pines has entered the Lake Tahoe Basin and is affecting visibility and air quality. We are closely monitoring the King Fire along with wind patterns from NOAA, visibility with the FAA and local and State law enforcement.
As of this morning (Thursday) the King Fire is almost 71,000 acres. The containment remains at 5%. About 3,700 fire personnel are working on this fire, including a very large contingent of aircraft and fire equipment.
Highway 50 is currently closed from Pollock Pines due to the King Fire Wildfire. SR-207 (Kingsbury Grade) is also closed due to ongoing roadway construction. Please use the following when planning your trip to Lake Tahoe this weekend:
From Reno
To South Lake Tahoe
Take Hwy 395 South (approx. 31 miles)
(Note: Hwy 395 will take you through Carson City)
Right on Hwy 50 to South Lake Tahoe
From Sacramento/Bay Area
To South Lake Tahoe
From Sacramento Hwy 50 east is closed from Pollock Pines due to a Wildfire
As an alternate route, Take I-80 east Truckee to Hwy 89. Go through Tahoe City and down the West shore of Lake Tahoe.
