[ARCHIVED] Jury Duty Warrant Scam

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department received several phone calls over the weekend from citizens stating they were called by subjects identifying themselves by the names of local law enforcement officers. The citizens were told that they have warrants for their arrest for failing to respond to a Jury Summons. The callers were then told they could avoid arrest on the warrant if they purchased “Green Dot” prepaid money cards and provided the code numbers to the caller. The callers were quite convincing as they used the names of local Judges, Court Clerks and Officers. Unfortunately many community members were scammed out of thousands of dollars.

This is one of many hoaxes involving Law Enforcement and we would like educate our community that our Law Enforcement Agencies do NOT call people and force them to pay money to avoid arrest, nor do we call and demand payment to keep your love ones out of jail or to free them from jail. Please do not hesitate to call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department if you ever have questions regarding these types of calls.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has posted notices at all “Green Dot” retailers in the area advising not to purchase them for the “purpose of avoiding arrest” and to call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department should they be told to do so.
