[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Sexual Assault Person of Interest Sought

UPDATE: Due to the media release of these photographs and limited information, SLTPD received an anonymous tip suggesting the identity of this individual. This afternoon, an attorney called the police claiming to represent the man. The identity of the man provided by the attorney matched the anonymous tip provided earlier. The attorney indicated his client is willing to cooperate with this investigation. The attorney has arranged to meet with his client at the police department. As this case is still under investigation and no culpability has yet been established to the point of developing probable cause to make an arrest, we are not releasing the identity of this person. Additional information may be released subsequent to an interview with the person identified. The SLTPD would like to thank our community for the rapid assistance they have given in attention to this case.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in a sexual assault investigation. The victim reported having been sexually assaulted early in the morning of August 28th at a residence in South Lake Tahoe. The suspect and victim had met only hours prior, so the victim could not positively identify the suspect. The photos below depict the suspect. Their appearance is grainy and distorted because they have been enlarged from the recording made by a convenience store video system. These were recorded in the area of the ‘Y’ and near the time of the assault. The below listed subject may use the name ‘Ben’ or ‘Benjamin’. He is a white male in his late twenties or early thirties, he is estimated to be about 6’-01” tall and weighs near 180 pounds. He has reddish hair and blue eyes. As you can see from these still photos taken at the end of August, he had shoulder length hair and a beard.

These photographs were not released immediately to the public because early investigative leads gave investigators a good potential of identifying this person. The person originally suspected to be the same man pictured here however has now been located, identified and cleared of any suspicion of being either the actual person pictured here or as to having any relationship to this case. Investigative leads have been exhausted at this point as to the actual identity of the person pictured here. We are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate this person. If you have any information on this subject please call the police department at 530-542-6100.
